May 2016 Free Food Offers

A free burger is one of the many free food offers for May 2016.

When you think of May, what do you think of? I know the old adage “April showers bring May flowers” comes to mind but so does Mother’s Day and Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer. Turns out we should be thinking of May as a month with tons of free food offers, too.

That shouldn’t surprise me. Since writing about food holidays on my Suddenly Frugal blog, I’ve come to realize that every month has at least one free food offer. Some months have more than others, providing opportunities for you to eat or drink for free or on the cheap nearly all month long.

I’ve already covered some of the May free food and deals in these articles:

Also, while I didn’t end up writing about Teacher Appreciation Day on May 3, I did end up taking advantage of it. That’s because my husband works at a college, and when he showed his college ID at Chipotle on May 3, we were able to get a BOGO (buy one, get one) dinner offer—two burritos for the price of one. Now that’s a cheap date. Keep in mind for next year that Teacher Appreciation Day is a bit of a misnomer. Many of the free food offers for this food holiday are available to anyone working in education, with an ID to prove it, like my husband.

There are still plenty more free food offers for May. Here are five more coming up soon or which happen to be available all month long.

1. Subway
Subway, the sandwich shop, wants you to think of it not just as a place to get lunch or dinner but as somewhere where you can grab breakfast as well. Throughout May if you visit a Subway before 9 a.m. and purchase a breakfast sandwich, Subway will give you another breakfast sandwich for free. This BOGO offer applies to six-inch sub sandwiches only—that is the free sandwich will be six inches; you must purchase a six-inch of foot-long sandwich to get the freebie.

2. Häagen-Dazs
Häagen-Dazs Shops are celebrating their Free Cone Day on May 10, scooping out free ice cream from 4-8 p.m. to people in markets across the country where there are participating Häagen-Dazs Shops. Use the Shop Finder tool on the Häagen-Dazs website to find your local shop. If free cone day sounds familiar, it’s because Carvel offered this freebie in Apriland DQ did the same the month before that in March.

3. RaceTrac
This RaceTrac freebie comes with an upfront price, but if you like fountain drinks and visit RaceTrac often, it could be worth the money. This is part of RaceTrac’s Sodapalooza FreeFills, which kicked off on May 4 and runs through July 31. Basically, when you buy the limited-time-only Sodapalooza cup at any RaceTrac location for $11.99, you’ll get free fountain and beverage refills through July 31. As an added bonus, each Sodapalooza cup also includes between $20 and $100 in coupons.

4. Burger 21
To celebrate National Hamburger Month this month, Burger 21 is giving away free cheeseburgers to members of its “B Loyal” club. To cash in your freebie, here’s what you have to do: download the “B Loyal” app before May 27, and you’ll get an offer for a free Cheesy Burger that you can redeem within 30 days of the download.

5. Wayback Burger
On Friday the 13th those with the word Luck in their names will actually have good luck. That is, burger lovers with any variation of “Luck” in their names—first, middle or last—who visit Wayback Burgers that day will receive a free Wayback Classic cheeseburger. Obviously, you must present a valid ID to prove your “Luck.”
