Navigating the Fair food menu as a diabetic

There are a bunch of tasty foods at the fair, but the calories can pack a punch. Health Partners put together a list of foods that are diabetic friendly.

FALCOLN HEIGHTS, Minn. (KMSP) - Walking through the Minnesota State Fair is like navigating a food mine field, especially if you’re a diabetic.

Buckets of Sweet Martha’s cookies are a fair favorite, but just three of them are 270 calories and 42 carbs. A tasty treat, no doubt, but that's a disaster for diabetics.

That’s why the dieticians at Health Partners have published their new list of fair food facts to help people with special diets navigate the fair food menus.

For example, to most of us deep-fried Oreos or Twinkies also top the list of fair foods must-haves.

But five deep-fried Oreo cookies are among the worst items on the new list with 108 grams of carbs and 891 calories.

Susan Marschke, a Health Partners registered dietitian says the peel-and-eat shrimp at Café Caribe is an example of a healthy fair food choice.

“This would be an excellent choice for someone to control carbohydrates to have a few of these because there aren’t any carbohydrates in shrimp,” said Marschke. “It's a protein rich food, and it's also naturally low in fat, which is fantastic.”

Those big smoke turkey legs are another healthier option. They have no carbs and only 363 calories.

Fried bacon is also surprisingly gets the healthy approval. Fried bacon on a stick has only five carbs and just 229 calories and it's gluten free, too.
