A vegan 'chicken' shop called 'Temple of Seitan' has sparked a mixed reaction after opening in London.

The new joint serves typical fast-food dishes made from seitan - a wheat protein - instead of meat.

Melbourne couple Rebecca McGuinness and her husband Pat O’Shea launched Temple of Seitan following the success of their pop-up stall in Brick Lane, Tower Hamlets.

The restaurant has seen massive queues after opening last Saturday.

Reviewers have raved about the vegan 'chicken' and chips - but some are apparently offended by the name.

Justin Pickering wrote on their Facebook page: "Seems like the owner is deliberately being offensive to Christians which is kind of sad considering the amount of hate and division there already is in the world."

In reply, the owners wrote: "Hi Justin not setting out to offend anyone, simply declaring our love for Seitan.

"Please feel free to post this as a regular visitor post, but the reviews are meant for people who've actually visited/tried the food."

Despite the attempt to appease, the comment sparked a lengthy debate nonetheless about whether the restaurant's name, and inverted cross symbol, was offensive.

Most stuck up for the new joint.

One wrote: "Ignore the absolute mentalists who have taken umbrage with the name alone: unreal food served by a super friendly crew."

Another added: "The best vegan chicken I have ever had. Hail seitan!"
